Minimum advertised price (MAP)

What a minimum advertised price is, how GOGETTERS protects you against pricing below it, and which MAP display options exist.

Introduction

Some suppliers and brands require that their products are never advertised below a certain price. That price is called the MAP: Minimum Advertised Price. If a supplier provides a MAP for a product, GOGETTERS makes sure your store respects it - automatically.

Why does MAP exist?

Brands use a MAP to protect the value of their products and to keep competition between resellers fair. If you advertise below the MAP, the supplier can refuse to keep supplying you. So the MAP protection is there to keep your supplier relationship (and your margin) safe.

What GOGETTERS does by default

Whenever we calculate a selling price for a product that has a MAP, we check the result against the MAP. If your calculated price (after margins and rounding) would be below the MAP, we raise the price to the MAP. This also applies to prices you type manually in the import list for suppliers that enforce MAP.

Example: a product has a B2B price of €10.00 and a MAP of €22.00. With a 50% margin and 21% VAT your calculated price would be €18.15 - below the MAP. The product goes into your store for €22.00 instead.

If you have a special agreement with the supplier and are allowed to price below MAP, contact our support team. We can switch off the MAP check for your connection, after which you can set any price you like.

Display options: MAP and the "compare-at" price

On Shopify, every product can have a compare-at price: the crossed-out "was" price shown next to the actual price, so customers see a discount. GOGETTERS has a few options that combine MAP, SRP (suggested retail price) and the compare-at price. These are configured by our support team on request:

  • MAP as selling price: the MAP becomes the selling price of the product. Simple and always compliant.

  • MAP as selling price + SRP as compare-at price: the product is sold at the MAP, and the (higher) SRP is shown crossed out next to it. Your customers see they are getting a deal, while you stay within the supplier's rules.

  • MAP as compare-at price: if the MAP is higher than the SRP, the MAP is shown as the crossed-out price and the SRP is your selling price.

These options should not be combined with each other; combining them can give unpredictable results. Our support team will advise which option fits your situation.

Portal users (WooCommerce, Prestashop, CCVShop): the compare-at options are Shopify features. The basic MAP price protection works on every platform.

How do I see the MAP of a product?

In the import list, the price field will not accept a price below the MAP for suppliers that enforce it - the price snaps back to the minimum. If you are unsure whether a supplier uses MAP, check the supplier's information page or ask our support team.
