GOGETTERS asks every store owner to complete their company details, including a VAT number. This article explains why this is required, how the VAT number is validated and what to do if you don't have one.
Where to find the page
Shopify app: open the dashboard and click My company, or use step 1 of the Setup guide ("Check your company details"). On a fresh installation the fields are prefilled with the address and email from your Shopify store settings - please check them.
Portal (WooCommerce, Prestashop, CCVShop): open the Company details page in the portal.
The form asks for your company name, address, postal code, city, country, company registration number, VAT number, contact name, email address, phone number and preferred language.
This page is also where you change the language of the app: you find the language setting at the bottom of the My company page.
Why we need this
One-click suppliers: to activate and pay one-click suppliers through the app, your company details must be complete. As the setup guide says: "Check your company details so you can easily enable our one-click suppliers."
Correct VAT on supplier orders: your country and VAT number determine how much VAT you are charged on one-click supplier orders and GOGETTERS invoices. EU companies outside the Netherlands with a valid VAT number are invoiced without Dutch VAT (reverse charge); Dutch companies, and EU companies without a valid VAT number, are charged 21% VAT.
Invoicing: your invoices are issued with these company details.
VIES validation
When you save the form, your VAT number is checked against VIES, the official EU VAT number database:
If the number is valid, it is stored in its official format (country code + number). If the registry returns a company name, your company name may be updated to match the official registration.
If the number is not valid, you see the error "Your VAT number seems to be incorrect." Check for typos, make sure you include the country prefix (for example NL or BE), and verify that your number is activated for EU transactions.
Once a valid VAT number is saved, any one-click supplier orders that are still awaiting payment are automatically recalculated with the correct VAT.
No VAT number? Enter NONE
If you don't have a VAT number (for example because you are VAT-exempt), enter NONE in the VAT number field, exactly as written. Your details are then accepted without VIES validation. Note that in that case the standard 21% VAT applies to charges where VAT is due.
After saving
When your company details are saved successfully you see the confirmation "Company updated successfully". In the Shopify app, step 1 of the Setup guide is marked as done and you are returned to the dashboard. You can then activate suppliers, and one-click payments are unblocked with the correct VAT treatment. See Your first steps after installing GOGETTERS.
